[edit] Get a Mic
You will need either a microphone with separate headphones or a headset that combines a microphone and heaphones. The easiest way to get these is to order them from our coming soon online shop at Www.Touchmods.Org
[edit] Build a Mic
You can also build the microphone yourself, if you have basic soldering skills. You can follow one of the two descriptions below. The SMD version requires good soldering equipment and skill and also a PCB, so for most users the nonSMD version would probably be easier.

so: PCB-free non-SMD Do It Yourself parts:

2)
PCB-based SMD version: Soon To Come!

[edit] Hack a Mic
Another option would be to get a Walmart iVoice mic and modify it a little bit. (Note that the iVoice does NOT work with the Touch without modifications!). Even with the additional hack, users have reported that the result is not very good for VoIP applications as it picks up a lot of background noise.
If you want to try this, you can follow the Walmart mic hack tutorial. Also note that there has been some different revisions of the Walmart mic, so the exact modification points can be a little bit different from described.
[edit] Why does the Mic capsule point downwards?
Even the nokia 770 has the mic form the bottom, left from the charger plug…
And you know why? nobody tells it to you, but the trick is to avoid “wind noise”. this is the noise of huge amplitude sensed by the mic when you breathe. and this is not all: If you would disassemble a high-end philips dictaphone like this…, http://www.oppictures.com/singleimages/400/PSPLFH937000_1_1.JPG ..you will see that the HOLE of the “MIC” which is normally held close to your mouth (above the red LED at the top edge) is a FAKE MIC hole, the REAL mic is hidden on the other side of the device, simply to avoid wind noise.
